During my work at BUROBRAAK I was commissioned to design a book with poems by Anton de Kom, published by Atlas Contact. Anton de Kom was a Surinamese anti-colonial writer, activist and resistance hero. He wrote these poems mainly during the Second World War in which he processed the slavery past in personal poems with beautiful descriptions of Surinamese nature.
As precious as these poems are, I designed a small yet elegant book to reflect their value. Featuring a golden cover and vibrant, striking illustrations by Frederick Calmes, the design captures both strength and beauty.
I made the interior layout of the text as spacious as possible, offering a sense of calm and allowing the reader to fully absorb the power of these compelling poems.
