sugar sculptures | 2015 - 2019
It is well known that cane sugar is closely linked to slavery and European colonization.
I became obsessed with sugar as a material when I moved to the Netherlands and started to delve deeply into colonial history. I wanted to use it as a material for the sculptures that were related to the body. It took many months, but eventually I developed the technique of mixing molten sugar with indigo, cocoa and other dyes and casting it in different molds. The surface structure of the results is simply stunning. Even if it is a difficult material to work with and preserve, the results and appearance are very interesting.
